The Voluntary Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program offers free tax help to low- to middle-income people who cannot prepare their own tax returns. Certified volunteers sponsored by various organizations receive training to help prepare basic tax returns in communities across the country.

 

In order to help the greatest portion of our community we ask you only register for one appointment.

The University of Denver's (DU) VITA program began as a program for international students. Accounting students and members of Beta Alpha Psi gain experience preparing tax returns and, in the case of international students, dealing with international tax treaties.

 

The volunteers for the VITA Program are protected under the Volunteer Protection Act, and as such, we must set limits for our site.  They are as follows:

All Taxpayers:

  • Income less than $40,000
  • No capital gains

Taxpayers who run businesses:

  • Business expenses less than $5,000
  • Cash method of accounting
  • No inventory at any time during the year
  • No net loss this year
  • No employees
  • No depreciation and amortization from Form 4562, this does not include depreciating a vehicle based on mileage.
  • No deduction for business usage of your home No prior year unallowed passive activity losses from this business.

DISCLAIMER: This list of limits helps to identify most acceptable situations for DU's VITA program. Some rare cases not listed may be outside the scope of our VITA site.
